An academic paper comparing the representation, role and significance of the villains in children's fantasy texts, specifically comparing Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone, and the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The paper explores what it means to be a conventional villain, and how each of the villains in question either subverts or fits into the role. My paper draws on the traditional forms of villainy and discusses how the White Witch is a traditional villain, whilst Voldemort, who is explored is much depth in the series, is hidden for much of the first book, and isn't an 'active evil' until the end of Goblet of Fire, is much more nuanced, but ultimately, the very reason Harry can love, growing up and maturing into a hero.
